5 Spheres of Social Media

October 5, 2008

Clearly defining segments of something as complex as the Social Web is a bit like trying to explain how men and women think; half of all people will most likely disagree with you. But will that stop us? Never.

This list is not definitive; It is, however, a great resource for showing our clients the complexity of the social web and where different opportunities exists.

So without further ado, here is are the 5 Spheres of Social Media, by the Stratius Group.

Networking

Charlotte Internet Marketing Broad social networking is what most people think of when they think “social media”. Myspace has captured the attention of the world with its widespread adoption by young online users and could be credited with much of the rampant growth the social web enjoys today.

The Social Networking Sphere includes all sites that are mainly geared around people meeting one another in a broad sense. These sites allow people to connect for various reasons, such as friendship, dating, resources, and careers. Most sites within this sphere will touch multiple other spheres as they try to provide as many valuable social media tools as possible to their users.

Examples:Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Meetup

Publishing

Charlotte Internet Marketing Publishing, sharing and the promotion of various media is the focus within the Social Publishing Sphere. This includes the large subcategory of blogging, specific media sites for sharing video or photos, and reference sites featuring community generated knowledge.

Subcategories: Blogging, Micro Blogging, Music, Photography, Reference, Video

Examples: Youtube, Flickr, Last.fm, Wikipedia, Squidoo

Linking

Charlotte Internet Marketing Sharing links to articles and other content, very often for promotion, is the priority of sites within the Social Linking Sphere. Many of these sites are referred to as “social book marking” sites, but this term looses accuracy since most of these sites are now geared towards sharing links or the promotion of content to other users as opposed to just saving them for later recall. Even a somewhat pure book marking site like Delicious.com is commonly used to promote links to others. Many of these sites utilize some type of accumulated voting value to promote the “most viewed” or “most liked” content for others to see.

Subcategories: Link Sharing, News Sharing

Examples: Mixx, Reddit, Stumble, HubDub, Newsvine

Interactive

Charlotte Internet Marketing Virtual, gaming, and crowdsourcing networks fill the Social Interactive Sphere. The focus of these networks is on dynamic interaction with others. The interactive portion can be a virtual 3D world that mimics our own, large gaming environments, or communities where users work together to solve problems and create goods and services.

Subcategories: Crowdsourcing, Social Gaming, Virtual Communities

Examples: Second Life, NameThis, Webkinz, Mosio, Threadless

Niche

Charlotte Internet Marketing Micro-focused networks that can really fall within or across many of the 5 spheres. Niche networks will begin to create much more valuable hyper-local online community content. But geography is just one section of niche. Site form around very unique interest from TV shows to sports and much more.

Examples: Kirtsy, Ning, My Church, Passport Stamp

7 Free SEO Assessment Tools

August 19, 2008

UPDATE: Since this post, we have launched YourSiteScore.com, a collection of online SEO report tools our own higher level SEO assessments (not free).

In the SEO world there are the pros, the novices, and then 99% of the people sit in between. Every webmaster, blogger, small business owner in the world should be learning the basics of SEO. And it does not have to be expensive to teach yourself some useful SEO lessons. There is a vast knowledge base available online, free to browse and educate yourself from, including many many free SEO tools, that can make the trip that much easier along the way.

  1. Search Status Firefox Addon - If you are not using Firefox, you have some catching up to do, start now. A recent favorite of mine, Search Status is by far the best SEO browser plugin I have seen. It lists the Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, and Compete.com rank automatically for every site discreetly in the status bar, and also has a ton of other options to dissect the SEO of any page. A must have.
  2. Search Engine Spider Simulator - A search engine spider is a program search engines use to “crawl” the web, looking for and archiving content, that will then be put through an algorithm to determine when and if it will be displayed in search results. It is important to know what words the spider sees in what order. Many people look over this simple step.
  3. Keyword Suggestion Tool - You probably think you know of a couple keywords people might type in to search for your site. You may even be targeting some keywords on your site already to improve your ranking there. But it is always good to use a keyword suggestion tool to look for the keywords your missing and to check their search rates.
  4. Yahoo Site Explorer - This Site Explorer along with its Google counterpart Google Webmaster Tools, allows you to claim your websites and then explore all the inbound linking that the search engine is able to find. If you are new to SEO, inbound links are a huge help in lifting your SEO performance. These free tools will allow you to explore your success in creating these.
  5. Website Grader - Cool little quick and simple grade of your website. A good basic tool for seeing where you stand.
  6. Dead Link Checker - This tool takes a little time, but its worth it; Making sure your links are working is important to your overall link strategy and to the search engines.
  7. SEO Chat - Last and certainly not least, SEOChat.com is a vast knowledge base for your SEO educational needs. Go explore.

We plan to add to this list inthe future, but feel free to suggest your own SEO assessment techniques or free tools with a comment below.

Watch the First Online Olympics

August 11, 2008

The last Olympics definitely had some online flavor to it, but live events? That didn’t happen. The Beijing Olympics is the first truly online Olympics, in the sense that the Obama Campaign is the first presidential campaign to really use the internet. It has happened before, but no where near this scale or value of product.

I remember growing up and being so enthralled by the 88 and 92 Olympics. The main media back then was some prime time replays and newspaper clippings. I remember our family would keep track of the medal count by cutting it out of the newspaper every day. I couldn’t wait to see that tally and add it to the clippings.

After the jump, see a list of places to watch the Olympics live and online.

Today, boy have things changed. Want to see a feature on the host city? Want to research the life story of America’s oldest Olympic athlete? Want to know everything about the construction of the bird’s nest? Its all there is excessive detail. And most importantly, if you want to watch the Olympics, every event, every game? Your only option is not just the 7 NBC networks feature the events. You can now watch everything online, with many events available online live (read more for a list of online live Olympic video).

Obama to Announce VP by Texts to Supporters

August 10, 2008

The Obama Campaign continues to impress in their utilization of new media in this campaign. Here is the exact twitter announcement from the Obama Twitter bot:

Announcing the VP candidate sometime between now & the Convention by txt msg & email. Text VP to 62262 or visit http://my.barackobama.com/vp

obama campaign logo - new media used for VP announcementIts pretty genius when you consider the immediate benefit he gains. One of the most valuable, after pieces of information in their campaign right now, will be given straight to their supporters. Its a great way to empower the supporters. Its right down the Obama “change” road. And of course he gets the cell phone number for thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of his most fervent supporters (and the entire press corps).

I imagine this will be a great tool in increasing supporter response for calls to donate, which they had already mastered better than any other past campaign.  Here is the text from the form on the Obama site to sign up to get your text message about the VP announcement:

Obama VP announcement via text messages new media styleBe the First to Know | Barack is about to choose a running mate, and he wants you to know first. You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be part of this important moment.

You can also text VP to 62262 to receive a text message on your mobile phone

10 Free Methods to Better Blog Traffic

August 10, 2008

As we build out the initial character of The Stratius Blog, I am going through the motions of some simple internet marketing steps that I always put in place when launching a blog or website.

These steps are the easy ones, the free or very cheap ones that anyone can do to take care of initial design, SEO, and Social Media efforts. These steps can go a long way, over the course of a couple weeks, towards giving you some good initial traffic. Make sure your content is good and they will keep coming back.

  1. Improve your design - Customize your header and graphics, use pictures in your posts, especially info graphics, if you do not have access to software for this, try a free stock image site and free online image editing software. Also include sharp badges and image links in your sidebar linked to your best content or content network. Don’t go overboard, ask your friends if your not sure
  2. Personalized URL - About 30% of all blog pageviews go to blogs with their own domains. Millions of blogs use generic host domains, i.e. blogname.wordpress.com. this is a pretty significant stat. Having a unique domain will help readers remember you and can improve search performance. It will run you about $20 or $10 if you already own the domain.
  3. Dish Out Easily Digestible Insights - Top ten lists, quizzes, tables, graphs, video, etc.
  4. Connect to a Community - Check MeetUp.com, Squidoo, Facebook groups, Craigslist, etc. If the community or group does not exist, even better, start it. Community = interaction = improved experience. Read the rest of this entry ?

Keep them Secret, Keep them Safe

August 7, 2008

AtomKeep is a cool new online service that has a definite need for the truly integrated online users. AtomKeep connects to all of your social networks, job board accounts, professional listings and syncs them. One update, no fuss. I am still exploring its usefullness, but so far I am pretty impressed. There are a couple networks I am on that they have yet to include, but besides MySpace they have all the majors. And not including MySpace is much more likely MySpace’s fault and not theirs. My favorite use is the Job Boards integration. Allowing users to sync their social and professional networks with the information they post to several job boards has obvious time saving and quality add benefits.

Keep an eye out for AtomKeep, they are adding more integration constantly. Check the sidebar on their site for a quick list of included networks as well as who they plan to add next. Just some of them included below.

Congress Gets Social

August 3, 2008

Social Media is fast approaching market saturation, or at least it seems that way. Facebook and Myspace have become mandatory for the young, mobile and even Corporate America. The Obama campaign has certainly made it a mandate that all future major political campaigns have a Social Media or New Media Director. Next up? Our Congressional Leaders.

Qik (live internet video via cellphone) received a nice share of coverage today from First Congressman John Culberson when he used Qik to interview House Republican lawmakers and gain some insight on the discussion about rising energy costs and gas prices. The livestream was embedded on the CSPAN homepage with plenty of comments and discussions going on in the video’s chat. You can view the video here. - ReadWriteWeb

Twitter has seen some congressional love and live blogging. The topic has recently been brought up on the floor to ask the question as to whether it was keeping with congressional rules. The C-Span of tomorrow might just be the I-phones and Blackberries in the pockets of congressional leaders. Perhaps some new insight in the Washington DC culture is soon to follow?
