What is Twitter Like?

October 10, 2008

How do you describe Twitter to a new user?

Understanding exactly what Twitter is and what its benefits are is a difficult task. This graphic compares Twitter to 4 other well known online services and notes how it is different from each.

Twitter is like a blog except is it is only 140 characters
Twitter is a status update except it is viewable in lots of places
Twitter is like a giant chat room except you choose the people you follow
Twitter is like instant messaging except it’s public & archived online

What comparisons make sense to you? How do you describe Twitter to potential new users?

UPDATE: Great post on the Webinar over at Pistachio, even a shout out to Stratius, thanks.

7 Deadly Sins of Twitter

September 26, 2008
seven deadly sins women

These Seven Deadly Sins should be avoided at all costs:

  1. No Avatar - Ok, lets move past the default avatar. Also lets make sure the one you choose shows a little insight into what you look like or who you are.
  2. No Website - People want to “connect”. Give them something that shows them more info about you. If you are on Twitter without a blog or company website, I probably will see less value in what you have to offer.
  3. Volume - Too much tweeting, let’s back off of that reply button son. And please if you are live tweeting an event, spare us every lame detail and just hit the highlights. Or, Too little tweeting, signing up for an account is a nice effort, but don’t expect anyone to listen to what you have to say if you only say it once a month.
  4. TMI - Too much information, sometimes we do not need to know where exactly your cat threw up last night.
  5. Follow Freak - Ok, yes that GreasMonkey script allows you to follow a 1000 people in less than an hour, but seriously, put some time into your relationships first. It wil pay off.
  6. Spam - Sharing links is fine. Feeding RSS is fine if its clear that’s what you should expect. But tweeting shameless self promotions out constantly will diminish your value to others quickly.
  7. Empty Content - Yes, occasionally we all like to know that you are eating soup for lunch, but if all you tweet is your daily routine, it will indeed become just that, routine. Again, where is the value?
  8. What are your least favorite Twitter faux pas?

    Additional Sins from readers:

  9. Bossy -  “Telling other people how to use Twitter” by Vinnie
  10. “’Touchy Feely Tweet‘, ie. ‘you look hot’ to ‘what are you wearing’ to ‘where do you live?’” by Ophelia
  11. X boxers - anyone that uses feeds to populate their tweets. People who play XBox have an option to use Twitter as to alert everyone to when they are playing Gears of War.” by Ophelia
  12. Hamster - ADD twitters that can’t remember what they were replying to, but replies anyways.” by Ophelia
  13. Using Twitter as email, by having long 1 on 1 chat conversations and forcing others to sit through it” by Lizzie
  14. Bas Spellre - “I hayt it wen someone is tryying to be realy profesionul on Twitter and every othur word is misspelt” by Ray

Mad Men Stuck in Olden Days

September 4, 2008

Somebody at AMC really screwed up.

Let’s say that you are a cable network with a hot show heading into season 2, your best show yet in fact, so successful some fans are impersonating the characters online and writing new dialogue for them (aka Fan Fiction)… What do you do? Easy, if your AMC, you make sure they know how little you appreciate hard core fans and threaten legal action in order to get them to stop.

I love the show Mad Med. Its a great throw back to a pretty sexy, although archaic, romanticized American history. And I am not alone. Some fans dig the show so much they embraced the characters by role playing them on the popular micro-blogging service Twitter [To catch up those unaware, Twitter is a somewhere between blogging and instant messaging, you send little 140 (cell phone text max) or less message to your network of contact].

Twitter folk are on this service all day, especially the die-hards. A lot of natural discussions happen in real time on this site, so naturally people discuss what they are passionate about, promote products, brands, websites, news, etc. This group of people came together organically and chose to have a little fun and play with their favorite tv characters.

Nine psuedo-characters from the show eventually began tweeting, writing in the voices of their counterparts on the show. Its great fun and pretty entertaining, especially when you consider the only people reading what they are writing are other fans of the show that choose to “follow” their tweets. Here is a sampling of tweets from one of the most populr characters, Peggy Olson:

@joan_holloway has it all wrong. I know the other office girls aren’t jealous. They wouldn’t want this job. But I’m not like the other girls (peggyolson)

I’m not sure I’m following these kids with their “young ideas” but Duck says we need them to get new accounts. So here’s to young ideas… (Roger_Sterling)

Bottom line is someone saw infringement here on AMC’s product and brand, Mad Men. Maybe a writer, probably on overzealous, soon to be fired legal type. But if AMC has anyone with some sense that works for them they would have and should have encouraged this. They had something being done for free, that you can’t buy, ravenous fans, evangelists even, of their product promoting it in a fun way to their peers. Was the brand being harmed? Not at all.

Last month I wrote about Online Brand Mascots, using Meghan McCain as an example, and how they can do wonders for a brand by augmenting Read the rest of this entry ?

10 Free Methods to Better Blog Traffic

August 10, 2008

As we build out the initial character of The Stratius Blog, I am going through the motions of some simple internet marketing steps that I always put in place when launching a blog or website.

These steps are the easy ones, the free or very cheap ones that anyone can do to take care of initial design, SEO, and Social Media efforts. These steps can go a long way, over the course of a couple weeks, towards giving you some good initial traffic. Make sure your content is good and they will keep coming back.

  1. Improve your design - Customize your header and graphics, use pictures in your posts, especially info graphics, if you do not have access to software for this, try a free stock image site and free online image editing software. Also include sharp badges and image links in your sidebar linked to your best content or content network. Don’t go overboard, ask your friends if your not sure
  2. Personalized URL - About 30% of all blog pageviews go to blogs with their own domains. Millions of blogs use generic host domains, i.e. blogname.wordpress.com. this is a pretty significant stat. Having a unique domain will help readers remember you and can improve search performance. It will run you about $20 or $10 if you already own the domain.
  3. Dish Out Easily Digestible Insights - Top ten lists, quizzes, tables, graphs, video, etc.
  4. Connect to a Community - Check MeetUp.com, Squidoo, Facebook groups, Craigslist, etc. If the community or group does not exist, even better, start it. Community = interaction = improved experience. Read the rest of this entry ?
